The Building Process

At Ernest Morris & Son, Inc., our mission is to build a solid foundation that will last a lifetime. And since 1979, we have been doing just that. Our name is synonymous with quality.

We endeavor to make sure that every component of your new home, from the basement sealant to the last roofing tile, meets our strictest standards of quality, every building code, and your satisfaction. We are firmly committed to you.

During all phases of construction, we take that commitment directly to our clients by working with them one-on-one. This open relationship means that our clients have access to details they otherwise might not be aware of—from totally customized plans created through their guidance to the inner components of a home that are never seen once construction is complete. Clients can be as involved as they please—but at every level, their wishes ultimately shape their new home.

Ernest Morris & Son, Inc. creates superior homes by using first-rate products from leading manufacturers, such as Better Living, Inc., Ferguson Enterprises, Inc., American Cedar, and Millwork, just to name a few. We take an innovative, dynamic approach to the building process that always results in a great home and a satisfied client. Let us start working with you to build your home of your future.

No matter what type of home you envision, building it occurs in five major steps:

  1. Preparing the Site: This includes everything from laying the driveway, to securing water and power services, to preparing sewage drain lines (or a septic field).
  2. Laying the Foundation: New homes truly get built from the ground up! So once the site is ready, we excavate the foundations—including concrete footings, foundation walls, basements and concrete floors.
  3. Delivering the Material: After the groundwork is taken care of, the first-rate materials we use arrive on site. By having everything for your new home at hand, we can focus on construction—saving time and money.
  4. Constructing the Shell: Under the direction of our Project Manager, we get started with framing, putting on the roof, installing windows and doors, and putting on any exterior siding.
  5. Finishing the Interior: Our crews take care of the final steps to make your dream home come to life—by putting up drywall, installing plumbing, painting and finishing interior surfaces, etc.

We specialize in post and beam, traditional, and contemporary homes. Or we can do additions or remodeling to your current home. Here you can find out more information about each option that might help you choose the design you want.

Post and Beam

Post and beam homes provide a unique level of flexibility in design while also giving excellent structural support. The posts and beams bear the weight of the home and transfer it evenly to the ground. They also give you the option of an open floor plan, with plenty of space and natural light, all while offering the beauty of finished wood both inside and out.

Traditional

Wherever you look in America, you are most likely to find a traditional-style home. It combines many familiar designs typical to each region and is usually made of brick or wood. This style is fairly simplistic, with little adornment, simple rooflines, and symmetrical spacing of windows and doors. Some of the most popular traditional styles include:

  • Country/Colonial: Probably the most popular style, country/colonial homes feature front or wrap-around porches and gabled roofs; they are usually one or two stories.
  • Cape Cod: Originating in the early 18th-century, when settlers in New England redesigned English houses with halls and parlors to fit the region, these homes usually have a clapboard or shingle exterior; steep roofs with side gables and overhangs; symmetrical doors, windows, shutters, and interior floor plan; and hardwood floors. They are usually one or one-and-a-half stories high.
  • Cottage: Very similar to Cape Cods, cottage-style homes are usually smaller and with very little exterior ornamentation. Most are one story.
  • Ranch: Ranch homes often feature asymmetrical shapes, as well as low-pitched roofs and built-in garages. Exterior is usually wood, brick, siding, or a combination. They are usually one story. You can also find ranches following contemporary-style plans.

Contemporary

Compared to the relative simplicity of traditional styles, contemporary homes incorporate unique design features and larger spaces. Common characteristics include:

  • a flat or shallow-pitched roof, often with prominent overhangs;
  • large windows and other glass openings;
  • very open floor plans;
  • a variety of geometric forms;
  • and exteriors combining siding, stucco, stone, brick, and/or wood.
